About Us

East Grinstead Opportunity Playgroup was founded in 1980 to provide pre-school education to those children unable to access mainstream nursery due to a disability or special educational need (SEN).

The Playgroup has since adopted a mainstream status to allow integration between children with additional needs and those who are typically developing. Opportunity Playgroup aims to have a high adult to child ratio in our sessions. All our children benefit from this and the quieter environment it creates, whether or not they have additional needs.

We encourage the developmental progress of our children in a safe, secure, happy and stimulating environment. We support our children in having a caring attitude to all things, other people and oneself and we encourage the children to feel confident, learn to share and communicate with their peers. Each child is valued for their contribution to the group.

In addition to our main room, the children have access to a messy room, a sensory room and a large, well-equipped garden.

Those families with a child who has additional needs can feel quite isolated. They value our wide experience of disabilities, SENs and behavioural problems and our extensive knowledge of the statementing process which enables us to offer them help and advice. OPG is led by a governing committee of parents and volunteers. Liaison with other settings and agencies were identified as a particular strength by Ofsted.

Eligible children may receive funding from West Sussex County Council.
